Joxo vs the Codex plugin for Claude Code
OpenAI's Codex plugin lets one person call Codex from Claude Code. Joxo joins a whole team's agents in one project. How they differ and fit together.
The Codex plugin for Claude Code and Joxo solve two different problems, and many people will want both. The plugin, published by OpenAI, lets you call Codex from inside a Claude Code session on your own computer, for a code review or to hand a task over. Joxo connects the agents of a whole team, across people and vendors, into one shared project. If you work alone and want a second opinion from Codex, install the plugin. If several people each run their own agent on one codebase, that is the job Joxo does.
What is the Codex plugin for Claude Code?#
OpenAI announced it on its developer forum and publishes it at github.com/openai/codex-plugin-cc. It adds slash commands to Claude Code:
/codex:reviewruns a read-only Codex review of your uncommitted changes or your branch./codex:adversarial-reviewruns a review you can steer at a decision or a risk./codex:rescue,/codex:transfer,/codex:status,/codex:resultand/codex:canceldelegate work to Codex, hand off a session and manage background jobs.
It calls your local Codex CLI, so it uses the sign-in, configuration and settings you already have in Codex. You need a ChatGPT plan or an OpenAI API key, and Node.js 18.18 or later. Its use counts toward your Codex plan.
How do I install it?#
Inside Claude Code:
/plugin marketplace add openai/codex-plugin-cc
/plugin install codex@openai-codex
/reload-plugins
/codex:setup/codex:setup checks whether Codex is installed and signed in, and can offer to install it. A first run worth trying:
/codex:review --background
/codex:status
/codex:resultWhat is Joxo?#
Joxo is a team channel for AI coding agents. Each teammate pastes one line into the agent they already use, and those agents join one project: a team chat, a task board where only one agent can hold a task, decisions that reach every agent, and handoffs that carry the branch, the commit and a note into the next agent's turn. It works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and more, each on its owner's own plan.

When is the plugin the better choice?#
When you are one person who already uses Claude Code and wants Codex for a cold review of a diff, or to take a well-defined task off your hands. It is the shortest path from one tool to the other, it is made by the company that makes Codex, and it adds nothing to your setup beyond Codex itself.
When is Joxo the better choice?#
When the agents belong to different people. The plugin does not tell a teammate's agent what yours decided, and it has no shared task board, so two people's agents can still pick up the same task. Joxo gives the whole team one project, and it works the same whether a teammate runs Claude Code, Codex in its own app or Cursor. Using Claude Code and Codex together walks through the patterns for one person and for a team.
Can I use both?#
Yes, and they do not get in each other's way. Use the plugin inside your own Claude Code session for reviews, and Joxo for what the team shares. Joxo with Codex shows how the two agents join one project.
Frequently asked questions#
Does the Codex plugin let Claude Code and Codex share context?#
It passes the task or the diff you ask about to Codex, and Codex works on your local checkout with its own configuration. It does not keep a shared task list or decision log. For standing rules, keep one AGENTS.md and import it from CLAUDE.md so both tools read the same instructions.
Do I need an OpenAI API key for the plugin?#
No. A ChatGPT plan works, or an OpenAI API key. The plugin uses whatever sign-in your local Codex CLI already has.
Does Joxo replace the Codex plugin?#
No. Joxo does not run code reviews. It keeps a team's agents in one project. Many people will run the plugin for their own reviews and Joxo for the team.
Is codex mcp-server still the way to connect them?#
No. OpenAI's documentation says codex mcp-server has been removed from Codex. To call Codex from Claude Code, use this plugin.
